about
Most of my music is inspired by the vastness and wonder of the nature of reality and our oneness with all things. One beautiful, life-affirming and awe-inspiring part of that universal sense of being is the simple laugh of a child. And in the case of this song, one specific child, our daughter Anjali.
Anjali's name actually appears twice in this title - once in its original Sanskrit form in the subtitle, and the English translation of the same as the primary title. "Anjali" can be translated as a blessing from heaven, but it can also mean an offering, a handful of food or flowers given with palms together so as not to spill a single bit, and it is from this gesture that the Buddhist and Hindu practice (which likely carried over to the Abrahamic religions) of placing palms together with reverence originated.
Relative to the actual young lady named Anjali that lives in my household, both meanings are relevant - she is both a divine blessing to our family, and our offering of love and compassion to the world.
And so, this track is an unabashed, blatant tribute to my lovely daughter, her gentle yet fierce spirit, intelligence, and humor.
She often goes to sleep listening to a playlist of relaxing ambient music, and so I thought "why not write a lullabye for her that could be on this playlist too?" I set out to write a dreamy, completely chill sleep track in the vein of my musical hero Olafur Arnalds. Of course, true to my own form, I couldn't leave it as some ho-hum milquetoast meditation track, and a little of the "West Riding drama" makes its way into the song. And then I remember - that's pretty exemplary of our Anjali, too. 90% delightful, 10% dramatic.
In the spirit of "anjali," this track is available for download free of charge. However, if you wish to contribute something, remember that the profits from sales of all of my music is donated directly to causes that help to alleviate suffering and demonstrate compassion and kindness to all beings. May you be happy, may you be peaceful, may you be well.
